Indian tribes now own gambling facilities in Welch, Prior Lake, Morton, Onamia, Walker and Mahnomen, Minn. Others have spent the money for health insurance and education for tribal members. Some tribes have invested gambling profits into new roads and sewer systems for their reservations. The gambling complexes have brought hundreds of Indian and nonIndian jobs to small towns and a stream of customers to fill nearby restaurants, motels, bars and convenience stores. Their success is a blessing to both the Indian and business communities. In fact, the state's six casino and entertainment complexes have emerged as highly successful minority-owned businesses.
